Automation is pushing telecoms toward zero‑touch operations, with AI, self‑healing and predictive maintenance improving reliability and efficiency.

State of autonomous operations
As operators embrace automation, they are now focusing on achieving zero-touch operations, enhancing service reliability, and optimising resource utilisation to meet the growing demands of the digital era.
The telecommunications sector has witnessed substantial advancement in the field of autonomous operations (AO), with clear targets established for the near future. The TM Forum’s MAMA programme has introduced the Autonomous Operations Maturity Model (AOMM), referenced as GB1042A (GB1042A Autonomous Operations Maturity Model (AOMM) v1.7.0 – TM Forum), which provides a framework for CSPs to evaluate their level of maturity in pursuing autonomy within their operations. These developments are evidenced by the widespread implementation of artificial intelligence-powered network management, self-healing mechanisms, and strategies for predictive maintenance.
AO is not restricted to service providers alone; equipment manufacturers, software developers, and consultants are also pivotal to the progression of autonomous operations. The TM Forum’s MAMA initiative sought to gather industry perspectives via a comprehensive survey, with findings compiled in the IG1346 report titled ‘2025 Autonomous Operations Maturity Industry Insights’ (2025 Autonomous Operations Maturity Industry Insights (IG1346) – TM Forum).
As telecom operators continue to adopt automation, their attention has shifted towards realising zero-touch operations, improving the reliability of services, and optimising the use of resources—efforts that are crucial for addressing the increasing demands of today’s digital landscape.
The authentic perspective of the industry is best captured through candid conversations with those who shape critical decisions, manage investment flows, and carry out the practical deployment of the Autonomous Operations framework in real-world scenarios. To facilitate such dialogue, the TM Forum’s MAMA programme is hosting a webinar & panel discussion The state of autonomous operations in 2026 on 28 May 2026, where prominent leaders from various organisations will engage in discussions on the role and evolution of Autonomous Operations within the telecommunications sector.
The panel has representation from CSPs, equipment vendors, BSS vendors, IT service providers, functional consultants, and business consultants. The outcome of the discussion will further enrich next year’s AOMM Survey, ensuring the model remains relevant to the evolving needs of the industry and reflects the collective wisdom of key stakeholders.
Register for this dynamic webinar packed with real-world insights, hard-won lessons, and practical success stories and learn from these experts who are turning Autonomous Operations ambition into action.
As the industry transitions from 5G to 6G and introduces more advanced Fibre networks, marked by innovations that surpass current expectations, the MAMA programme is also adapting. It is now focused on developing contextual assets that empower stakeholders, enabling a faster, safer, and more profitable AO journey. These evolving assets are designed to address new challenges and harness emerging opportunities, ensuring that the industry remains resilient and agile amidst rapid technological change.
TM Forum members are welcome to be part of this journey. By actively participating in these initiatives, members can contribute their expertise, share insights, and collaborate with peers to drive the future of autonomous operations in telecommunications. This collective engagement will not only strengthen the community but also ensure that the evolution of the Autonomous Operations aligns with the industry's future needs and aspirations.
